AI Policy

AI Policy for Old Testament Essays

  1. Purpose and Scope

This policy outlines our approach to AI usage in the submissions made to Old Testament Essays (OTE). As a journal, we are not involved in research, data processing, or article preparation; our role begins when an article is submitted. Therefore, rather than regulating the use of AI, this policy aims to uphold the integrity and quality of submissions to OTE.

  1. Definitions

AI Tools are software that use machine learning or computational methods to generate or support content. Many such tools exist, each offering different functionalities. Two key functionalities, among others, include:

  • Generative AI: Creates text, images, or data.
  • Assistive AI: Performs tasks like grammar correction, translation, summarization, or formatting.

The line between generative and assistive AI is often blurred, as many tools offer features that combine elements of both types of functionality.

  1. Author Guidelines

3.1 Authorship and Responsibility

OTE accepts submissions made by human author(s) who have registered in the OTE systems. Therefore, by submitting an article, the author(s) take responsibility for the submissions that they make. Authors bear full responsibility for the originality, accuracy, and ethical integrity of all content that may have been assisted or generated by AI tools.

AI tools cannot be listed or credited as authors under any circumstance. Nevertheless, the journal recognizes that authors may use AI tools in the development of their submissions. It is the responsibility of the author(s) to ensure that any use of AI tools is done ethically.

3.2 Ethical Use and Unethical Use

AI tools are available for use, and we do not prescribe whether authors can or cannot use AI.

Ethical Use of AI

The author(s) who utilise AI tools have a responsibility to use them ethically, in accordance with the norms and standards accepted in the scholarly community.

  • AI is used for research purposes.
  • AI is used for language editing purposes.

The following should be noted by the authors:

  • Authors are responsible for ensuring the reliability and accuracy of all submitted content.
  • AI use must adhere to copyright laws, privacy standards, and ethical research guidelines.

Unethical Use of AI

We would deem it an unethical use of AI, and therefore, the article would be withdrawn and retracted in the following cases:

  • An article that is wholly generated using AI: An AI-generated article, where the author simply instructs the AI tools to generate content, would not be considered. If not detected soon enough, would be withdrawn at any point in the review process.
  • An article that is partly generated using AI: An article that exhibits signs of sections that are AI-generated. Such an article will not be accepted, and if detected during the review process, the article will be withdrawn.
  1. Editorial Oversight

The editor(s) have the right to reject any manuscript submission if AI tools have been used inappropriately or unethically at any stage during the review process.

If it is determined after publication that AI tools were used inappropriately or unethically, the editor(s) reserve the right to retract the article or implement other corrective measures as necessary.
